Art Atrium is presenting China Translated in association with Chinese Contemporary Art Tasmania Inc. and China Cultural Centre.

Western artists encountering Chinese culture today do so under very different circumstances than their seventeenth and eighteenth century counterparts. Less a country shrouded in mystery, Westerners now have a greater understanding of China’s long and varied cultural traditions and systems of belief.

This exhibition focuses on the work of a number of Tasmanian artists who have engaged with aspects of Chinese culture and through such  encounters, have created works with new insights into their own culture as well as into broader contemporary issues.

Artists participating in this exhibition include Dr. Steve Carson, Karin Chan,  Chen Ping, Tracey Cockburn, Dr. Jan Hogan, Dr. Megan Keating and Dr. Matthew Boden, Gregory Leong & Dr. Xingming Wu.

Spiritual Sense of Place

Kate Briscoe, Paul Connor, David Middlebrook,
Susan O’Doherty, Andrew Tomkins

27 - 31 March 2019

Art Atrium presented an exhibition ‘Spiritual Sense of Place’ at Art Central Hong Kong 2019 with the works of five Contemporary Australian artists – Kate Briscoe, Paul Connor, David Middlebrook, Susan O’Doherty and Andrew Tomkins. Kate Briscoe exhibited her series of landscape paintings which conveys the sensuality of the landscape closely observed in terms of structure, form and textures, from a geological perspective. Paul Connor  continued his exploration of both the natural and urban landscape with the medium of iPad drawings. David Middlebrook presented his new series of work which captures the spirit of landscape during his Artist Residency in Ningbo Art Museum in China in 2018.  Susan O’Doherty exhibited a series of small interesting and yet thought provoking and challenging installation based on our everyday life and home environment.  Andrew Tomkins had  his new series of intricately cut, painted and overlaid polyester film collages reflecting on both the untouched and disburbed natural landscape and environment.
