Sating the Soul
In recognition of the original function of papercuts as offerings, the exhibition will feature depictions of food and farmers. This includes silhouette portraits of market gardeners who lived in Botany: Ah Yun and Wong Soung. Ah Yun worked on the Coward family farm. The patriarch James Coward, was once elected Mayor. An abundance of potato was grown on the property. By contrast Wong Soung worked on land leased by War Mow’s in nearby Mascot. In the area, Chinese root vegetables were among the cultivated.  A majority of the cuisine represented is considered to have medicinal applications. Their colourful renditions are intended to delight visitors of all kinds. During the opening a selection of woodblocks will be available for patrons to use. The prints are intended to be burnt as offerings to their deceased relatives.
