Tony Costa

In 1988, he was selected to participate in the Triangle Artists’ Workshop in New York. He was an Art Gallery of NSW Archibald Prize Winner in 2019 and Archibald Prize Finalist in 2018, 2017 & 2015 and he had also been a finalist in the Art Gallery of NSW Wynne Prize, Sulman Prize &  Dobell Prize for Drawing as well as a finalist in Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Fleurieu Biennale and the Kilgour Portrait Prize at Newcastle Art Gallery. He was the winner of the 2014 Paddington Art Prize for Landscape painting.

‘I begin all paintings with direct contact with my subjects, gathering  sensations and information. My primary concern is to trap the energy of my subjects, all the things I cannot see, the emotional feelings over and above the physical reality. I am drawn to the unique rhythms of the Australian landscape. Ultimately the invention and the unity of the work is what matters most. I am always interested in transcending appearances in order to discover new pictorial truths.’   Tony Costa
